Smuggled smokes
SHENZHEN Customs seized more than 50,000 cartons of smuggled cigarettes last week, the biggest haul this year, the department said yesterday. The smuggled cigarettes were found in two containers for export.
Gold medallions
A SET of 24 pure gold Universiade medallions was issued yesterday. Each badge features a different Universiade event and only 200 sets will be released, priced at 8,000 yuan (US$1,195) each.
Buji flyover opens
THE Buji Flyover on Shenhui Road opened Tuesday and is expected to greatly relieve traffic congestion in the Buji area in Longgang District. The elevated bridge was about 900 meters in length and would divert vehicles heading to downtown Shenzhen or Longgang and Huizhou, the transport authority said.
Killing trial
A YOUNG man went on trial at the intermediate people s court accused of killing a woman targeted for robbery in Guangming New Zone last year. Ye Nannan, 18, was accused of stabbing the woman to death when she resisted. The family of the victim was seeking 500,000 yuan (US$74,627) in compensation, the court was told. The prosecutors held that Ye s mother was also liable because her son was under 18 at the time of the killing. The trial continues.
Police text messages
A TOTAL of 996,446 motorists in Shenzhen had registered for text messages since traffic police launched the service in March to remind drivers of minor offenses such as illegal parking. The text messages allowed more than 450,000 drivers to avoid being penalized, police said yesterday.
Housebreakers seized
THREE men were arrested Tuesday for allegedly breaking into apartments in the Yuanlingxincun housing estate in Luohu District and stealing more than 200,000 yuan (US$29,851) in cash and gold jewelry in early October, police said yesterday. The three suspects, whose identities were not available, also admitted to having broken into apartments in other housing estates in Luohu and Longgang districts last month. Police are investigating.
Shonky cement
AN unlicensed factory in Longgang District was closed yesterday for allegedly producing substandard cement. According to Chinese-language media reports, the factory was producing tons of substandard cement each day and selling it throughout the city. Authorities are investigating.
