Mercury plunges

THE minimum temperature will drop to 14 degrees Celsius with the arrival of a cold front from the north today, Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory sources said.

City temperatures ranged between 20 and 27 degrees Celsius with light mist yesterday. Today s maximum temperature is expected to reach 20 degrees Celsius.

Bicycle lane

A METER-WIDE bicycle lane will be built along Shennan Boulevard along with bicycle stands and sun shelters for bicycle riders, a report of the inspection team headed by Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Qiu Baoxing, said Sunday.

The team was reassessing cities that won the China Habitat Environment Prize.

Research expedition

A TOTAL of 46 environmentalists have joined a research expedition to Antarctica for a three-week study of the climate and oceanic conditions in the region to mark the anniversary of the U.N. Copenhagen Climate Change Conference.

Three were from Shenzhen and they hoped to arouse the public concern over climate change, a ceremony in Shenzhen was told Sunday.

Window shattered

A RESIDENT in the Xinghaimingcheng residential compound in Nanshan District found a window in her bedroom had been shattered by steel balls.

No balls were found in the room. Nantou police officers said the window was broken by steel ball guns.

The balls could go through 5mm toughened glass and could be fatal if people were hit, police said.

Eco title

YANTIAN District has been listed as a national model of ecological environment protection, becoming the first district to claim the title in Guangdong Province.

There are a total of 373 nature reserves in the province.

iPad smuggling

SHENZHEN Bay Customs seized 88 smuggled iPads and 340 mobile phones worth around 950,000 yuan (US$142,866) carried by inbound travelers last Thursday, detaining 14 suspects, the department said yesterday. An investigation is under way.
