MPC to meet early
THE second session of the Fifth Shenzhen Municipal People s Congress (MPC) will open in January, much earlier than provincial and national people s congress sessions.
As well as routine work to review and pass government reports, the budget report and reports by the people s court and procuratorate, lawmakers will review the overall planning of the 12th Five-Year Program between 2011-2015, the Standing Committee of the Shenzhen Municipal People s Congress said.
Official fired
A FORMER senior official with the city financial development office has been removed from his post and expelled from the Party for accepting bribes, the Shenzhen Municipal Committee for Disciplinary Inspection of the CPC said Monday.
The committee said Li Lin, former director of the financial development office, had been handed over for criminal prosecution.
Traffic offences
A TOTAL of 570 pedestrians and bicycle riders had chosen voluntary community service instead of fines for traffic offences Monday, the first day of a police campaign on pedestrian offences.
A total of 913 people were caught for minor violations. The campaign would continue until Friday, police said.
Volunteers award
SHENZHEN Volunteers Association won the National Youth Volunteers Award, the top national award for volunteers and voluntary organizations, Sunday, International Volunteer Day.
The award was bestowed for outstanding performance in organizing volunteers to participate in service programs of all kinds, the association said yesterday.
It is the first time the association has won a national award since it was established in 1990.
Illegal taxis
AUTHORITIES had confiscated 388 vehicles and detained 208 people for resisting transport officers in the crackdown on illegal taxis launched Nov. 28, the city transport commission said Monday.
Authorities would focus on private cars operating as illegal taxis at checkpoints and railway stations in the days ahead.
