A FORMER traffic police officer appeared in court Wednesday on a charge of causing the death of a retired soldier while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Wang Fengli, a former Gongming traffic police officer, was taken into custody Jan. 13, 12 days after the accident that killed Zou Weixian, 24, a former frontier soldier who worked at a factory in Longhua Subdistrict.

In the preliminary trial two months ago, Wang admitted driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of an accident after knocking down a pedestrian at the intersection of Bayi Road and Renmin Road in Longhua, Bao an District.

At Wednesday s hearing, new evidence provided by the Bao an District Traffic Police Brigade and Gongming Traffic Police Unit showed that Wang had voluntarily surrendered to police.

Prosecutors accepted the evidence.

In the first trial, both sides had argued over whether Wang had confessed voluntarily. Wang s lawyer insisted that Wang had confessed only after receiving a notice from police demanding he cooperate with the investigation. Prosecutors had argued that Wang had been caught 12 days after the accident after a review of camera footage and information provided by the public.

Wang s family had signed an agreement with Zou s parents for compensation of 600,000 yuan (US$90,117).
