A MIDWIFE who had allegedly stitched up the anus of a new mother after delivery in revenge for not having received a cash bribe took the patient and two local media to court for defamation.
Zhang Jirong of Shenzhen Phoenix Hospital in Luohu District told the Luohu District People s Court that the extortion claim by Lin Jing and her husband Chen Hua has ruined her reputation as a professional midwife, the China Youth Daily reported Thursday.
Zhang also said the coverage of the issue by two local newspapers was biased and defamatory.
Chen said he was infuriated. He said he had been considering taking Zhang and the hospital to court for compensation, but did not have the time to do so because I had to take care of my son and wife after the surgery.
Lin claimed her anus had been stitched up after delivery July 23 but this was denied by Zhang who claimed she had conducted minor surgery on Lin to stop her bleeding from hemorrhoids after delivery. But Zhang admitted she wasn t qualified to conduct the surgery and should have called hospital doctors.
Zhang said she had never solicited money from Lin and Chen. Her claim contradicted Chen who said Zhang had hinted four times at tips before the delivery and accepted 100 yuan (US$15) Chen gave her.
Chen claimed Zhang was not happy with the 100 yuan so she sutured Lin s anus. Zhang admitted receiving 100 yuan but had secretly put it in a drawer beside Lin s hospital bed.
The matter attracted wide media attention because of the bizarre nature. City health authorities have intervened to investigate the matter. (SD News)
