TEMPERATURES are expected to plunge to a minimum of 8 degrees Celsius on Friday as a cold front arrived from the north, the Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory said yesterday.

The cold front was expected to begin affecting the city Wednesday. Cold winds coupled with light rain would keep the maximum temperature at 14 degrees Celsius.

Low temperatures will last two days before the mercury begins to climb at the weekend.

The observatory reminded residents, especially the elderly and children with respiratory diseases, to be aware of the temperature change and keep warm.

Temperatures in northern Guangdong cities would drop by 7-12 degrees Celsius and moderate rain was expected Wednesday and Thursday. Minimum temperatures in mountainous regions could fall to zero around Friday.

Temperatures in Shenzhen yesterday were between 19-25 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity was 60 percent and the air quality index was between 51 and 71, a fair level reading.

Cold fronts hit northern China over the weekend, sharply dropping temperatures by 6 to 10 degrees Celsius from Saturday in northeastern China, northern China and regions along the Yellow River and Huaihe River, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said in a statement.
