AUSTRALIAN Nick Vujicic, who was born without arms or legs but has come to terms with his lot in life, delivered an inspirational speech to Shenzhen residents yesterday.
Treat your weaknesses and obstacles as opportunities to make progress. You will never know what is around the corner if you don t turn it, Vujicic said to a large audience at the Civic Center.
Dressed in a black suit with a blue shirt, Vujicic, 28, smiled throughout his speech, sharing his life experiences to encourage people not to give up hope when they encountered difficulties.
As human beings, we need to find what is the value of life. Set your goals, move a step forward at a time. When you fall, pick up your courage to get up. When you look back, you will find you have made progress and built your confidence, he said.
When you find the meaning of your goals, you will have the courage to try, he said.
The eloquent speaker did not attempt to cover his disability. Instead, he required a close-up of his body on the two big screens in the hall, which was filled with hundreds of people.
He lay on a desk and then got up using his head, showing people all things are possible if you try.
Give yourself a chance, give hope a chance and don t give up, he said.
Once a child asked me what caused my disability, I told him cigarettes , I think that s an effective way to encourage children not to smoke, laughed Vujicic, who was born without limbs and delivered his speech with humor, receiving repeated applause.
Vujici also called for people to have a grateful heart and be a leader to encourage people to do the right thing.
You don t have to be a CEO or be on stage to become a leader. Do the right thing to lead others,
If you want more hope in life, maintain hope; if you want more integrity in our society, cultivate integrity, Vujicic said passionately.
I d like to be remembered as a man of love and integrity after death, he said.
Vujicic established a nonprofit organization, Life Without Limbs, at the age of 17 and has traveled to more than 20 countries speaking on subjects such as disability, hope, and finding meaning in life.
I m inspired by Vujicic s speech to do whatever I can to live a meaningful life. I don t see any pessimism or complaining in him. Instead, he delivers a message of hope and love, said Wang Dong, a young man working in a local logistics company.
For Sun Jian, 25, and also disabled man, Vujicic s speech strengthened his determination to complete a computer training course.
I m unemployed and I hope to work in an IT company after finishing my training course, Sun said.
