A MAN had been detained for posting online the personal information of about 3,000 homeowners in an upmarket residential property in Futian District, local media reported Saturday.

The man, identified only by his surname Lan, admitted uploading the personal information to Baidu.com, a domestic search engine, in November, open to downloading to gain Baidu Money, virtual money used to purchase gaming services on the Web site, according to police in Futian District.

Lan, a real estate agent for Shenzhen Shihua Real Estate Co. Ltd., said he collected all the information at work. I needed Baidu Money to download some software from the Internet. The more information I could provide to others on the Internet, the more Baidu Money I could get, so I uploaded all the information to the Internet, Lan said.

Lan s actions had nothing to do with the company. We have a strict policy to protect homeowners information and if Lan s crime is confirmed, we will fire him immediately and tell other companies in the industry not to hire him, an unidentified company official told the media.

The homeowners committee at the residential estate, Huangpuyayuan, told police the personal information of about 3,000 homeowners had been posted on Baidu.com in November.

The list provided names, addresses and mobile phone numbers of residents.

The list was uploaded to the Web site s free uploading and sharing section, in which uploaded material was not edited or changed by the Web site, according to media reports.
