A RETIRED public servant with the Government Offices Administration of the Bao an District Government allegedly defrauded people of more than 1 million yuan (US$149,250) by promising to introduce them government jobs.
Li Yulan, in her 50s, claimed she was a section chief and could get quotas for job vacancies because of her special connection with district leaders.
Eight families had paid 1.03 million yuan. Li had disappeared after retiring in June, police said.
A woman surnamed Ou said she couldn t believe Li had cheated her because they had known each other for more than 10 years.
In April, Ou gave Li 130,000 yuan, asking her to find a government job for a relative. Li also defrauded another seven victims using the same tactics.
Investigations showed Li was only a government employee. Police are investigating.
