Hostages freed

A MAN took a woman and another man hostage for two hours near Tangtou Road in Shiyan, Bao an District at noon yesterday before police moved in and forced him to the ground.

The man, surnamed Luo, 27, a native of Zhejiang Province, took the hostages when he saw his former girlfriend identified as Ma had a new boyfriend. Luo followed Ma and her boyfriend on a road near the Hongfa Science and Technology Park. He took Ma hostage, threatening her with a knife. Ma s boyfriend called police before offering to swap Ma. Police took a chance and rushed Luo, wrestling him to the ground.

Gas leak

GAS supplies in Minzhi Subdistrict, Bao an District, were suspended for four hours yesterday morning due to a gas leak caused by roadworks on Bulong Road. Thousands of households were affected. A bulldozer accidentally ruptured a gas pipeline. The incident caused a heavy traffic jam. It took the gas company four hours to repair the rupture.

Vaccine shortage

THE city is facing a shortage of rabies vaccines due to an increase in the number of injuries caused by pets. Rabies vaccines are mainly imported from France and Switzerland and a reduction in supplies had aggravated the situation, according to city s center for disease prevention and control. The center said about 5,000 residents were injured or scratched by animals in the months between January and August.

Lunar eclipse

SHENZHEN residents will be able to see a partial lunar eclipse in the evening of Dec. 21, sources from the Shenzhen Astronomical Observatory said yesterday. Experts say observers can see the partial eclipse between 5:45 p.m. to 6:01 p.m. The city would also have a chance to see eclipses June 16 and Dec. 10 next year, the observatory said.

Toddler loses legs

A GIRL lost her legs when a mixer truck run over her while she was crossing a road near the Shanxia Wet Market in Pinghu, Longgang District, on Saturday. The 3-year-old was in critical condition and doctors said she would spend her life in a wheelchair even if she survives. A witness said the mixer truck was speeding when it passed the market.

Bike rider killed

AN electric bike rider was killed when he was knocked off his bike and run over by a dump truck in Shajing Subdistrict, Bao an District, at noon yesterday. A passenger on the back of the bike was injured.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the truck brakes had failed. Police are investigating.

Online fraud

A man was detained for allegedly committing online fraud involving 5,000 yuan (US$758), Longgang police said. The suspect, identified only as Huang, allegedly hacked a QQ account and stole the password. Huang then used the QQ ID to send a message to a victim on the QQ friend list to borrow money. The victim transferred 5,000 yuan to the suspect, who he thought was his friend.

Thief caught

A man who allegedly stole a mobile phone in a city in Northwest China s Gansu Province and fled to Shenzhen was recently arrested in Bao an District. The man, identified as Zhao, has been wanted by Gansu police for months. He was employed as a night club security guard using false identification.

Port throughput

Port throughput in Shenzhen was 202.45 million tons at the end of November, surpassing the total volume for 2009 and an increase of 15.59 percent compared with the same period last year, Shenzhen transport commission sources said yesterday.

Passenger turnover at Shenzhen Airport had reached 24.44 million by the end of November, equivalent to the total volume for 2009 and an increase of 9.66 percent.
