SHENZHEN Meteorological Observatory issued this winter s first yellow alert yesterday, indicating city s temperature will drop to a minimum of 6 degrees Celsius today under the influence of a cold front sweeping down from the north.
The cold front, which is affecting most part of South China, ended a month of dry weather with light rain falling yesterday afternoon.
The minimum temperature is expected to fall further to 5 degrees Celsius on Friday morning. The temperature is expected to begin rising Saturday.
The observatory reminded people to wear warm clothes and keep bathrooms ventilated to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning when taking a shower.
The Central Meteorological Administration issued a snowstorm alert yesterday, saying more areas south of the Yangtze River will experience heavy snow today. Beijing and Tianjin embraced the coldest December morning for the past decade with minimum temperatures down to minus 11 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Jilin Province fell sharply to minus 37.6 degrees Celsius yesterday. The extreme weather is expected to last for several days.
Snow fell in 53 counties in Hubei Province yesterday and, in some areas, the snow reached a depth of 12ml in Hunan. Jiangxi had also reported snow falls yesterday.
