The Dyers Association of Tirupur (DAT), which had given a call for going on an indefinite strike from 26 October, has postponed the same to December 1, following an assurance from the Tamil Nadu government that it would look into the issue of the fine levied by the Supreme Court.
According to the President of DAT, Mr Samiappan, the Union Textiles Minister and the state Deputy Chief Minister have told the trade body to give them some more time, to bring forth an amicable resolution of the vexed issue.
It may be recalled that, recently the DAT members had threatened to go on an indefinite strike against the Supreme Court’s judgment, which imposed a fine of Rs. 556 million on the dyeing and bleaching industry of Tirupur, for polluting the Noyyal River.
He said that, the Deputy CM has also promised to consider all possible measures and speed up the process of getting subsidy from the Central and State governments for the already established 20 Common Effluent Treatment Plants.
He added by saying that, with the hope of getting a permanent solution for the effluent problem from the State and Central governments, DAT has decided to postpone the indefinite strike till December 1, 2009.
