Economic recession has not only impacted the textile industry, which has a lion’s share of 61 per cent in the country’s exports, but has also hit the institutes providing professional education in textiles, which is evident from a decline in enrollment of students.
“To meet future requirements of the textile industry, the country badly needs a professional and qualified workforce,” said Textile Institute of Pakistan Chancellor Arif Hasan while speaking at a press conference at the Karachi Press Club on Saturday.
The faculty of the institute stressed the need for a trained and professional workforce in the textile sector, which provided over 38 per cent employment in the country.
Irfan Malik, a faculty member of TIP, said Bangladesh and other regional countries were taking Pakistan’s market share in the region while Pakistan was lagging behind due to high cost of production and lack of research and innovative designs.
“Today’s textile designing needs much more sophisticated technology and to operate these machines we do not have required technical and professional human resource. Resultantly, our industry invites technical and managerial staff from Sri Lanka which shows the importance of professional graduates,” a faculty member said.
“To meet future challenges faced by the industry, we need to transform ourselves. If we want to export value added products, we need to produce professional workforce capable of embracing new challenges of technology and innovation,” a member stressed.
The faculty members said though TIP produced over 100 students annually and other few institutes trained the workforce, there was still a wide gap in demand and supply of professional workforce in the market. Students had numerous opportunities in the industry, they added.
The institute generates Rs50 million annually through fee and its annual expenses are over Rs70 million, leaving a gap of Rs20 million which is provided in the form of donation by the National Textile Foundation (NTF), created by the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA).
TIP, with an aim to provide professional education with necessary theoretical knowledge to meet the growing demand of professional workforce, was established with the financial help of Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, formerly EPB, in 1994. TIP is a brainchild of APTMA and is being run independently by NTF.
It has recently taken a major step towards further development by establishing Textile Research and Innovation Centre. The research centre will be vital for meeting the country’s needs of emerging technologies and will also provide a new dimension for textile education.
It will also help the textile industry to manufacture new value added products and become competitive in the changing global market.
