Industry: Fina ban non-textile suits

The World Swimming Federation has banned non-textile suits following its congress here in Rome yesterday, specialised website swimnews.com said.

It means that swimsuits made from plastic derivatives such as polyurethane will be banned.
According to swinnews.com only seven out of 180 federations voted against the proposal put forward by the United States to return to textile suits.
The controversial suits made from materials such as polyurethane made their first appearance in 2008 and since then a marked improvement in times and performances has been seen.
World records have tumbled at such an alarming rate to the point that it is almost a surprise when one doesn't.

The ban will only come into effect from 2010, though, meaning that 100 percent polyurethane suits such as the Jaked 01 will still be used here at these championships.

That means that another raft of world records could fall again this year but that then may be the end of such record-breaking performances for a long time to come.
