SA: Textile wage negotiations still in progress

Write: Bates [2011-05-20]
Wage negotiations in some textile sectors are still in progress, the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (Sactwu) said on Tuesday.

Sactwu conducted wage negotiations this time of the year in 12 centralised and 73 individual plants in the textile, leather, footwear and clothing industries, it said in a statement.

The union added that for the 12 centralised bargains, six had been settled and six were still locked in negotiations.

For the 73 plant bargains, 32 had been settled, 27 were still in progress and 14 were in formal dispute.

Sactwu said that for the centralised bargains, amid depressed industry conditions, settlements had already reached seven to 8.5 percent and had been concluded in the home textiles (seven percent), cotton sector (7.5 percent), wool and mohair sector (8.1 percent), carpets sector (7.5 percent), woven and crochet sector (7.5 percent), and footwear sector (8.5 percent).

The union added that wage negotiations in some textile sectors were still in progress, while the non-wovens sector had developed settlement proposals which were now being canvassed.

In the leather sector, negotiations were deadlocked in the general goods and handbag categories, as well as the tanning sector, Sactwu said.

The clothing sector would conduct its second round of negotiations over the next two days in Cape Town.
