Traditional owners back bauxite mine near Irwin reserve

May 27, 2010 - A group of traditional owners in far north Queensland have given the go-ahead for a controversial bauxite mine to be built in Cape York.
Mining company Cape Alumina wants to build the $1.2 billion mine north-east of Weipa.
The site is near the Steve Irwin nature reserve.
The mining company says 17 traditional owners from the region have written to Queensland Mines Minister Stephen Robertson, asking him to approve the project.
Cape Alumina says the show of support from the Pargan people is significant and at odds with some conservation groups who say the mine will impact on local rivers and fauna.
The mining company says the project would employ about 1,700 people.
