The wholesale prices of white garlic and Solo garlic surged to a record 6.5 yuan and 7.5 yuan per 500 grams respectively on May 3, reports Chongqing Economic Times.
According to the report, the wholesale price of garlic had skyrocketed about 30 times from the price of 0.2 yuan to 0.3 yuan per 500 grams in April 2009.
The report added that the price of garlic hit six yuan per 500 grams in December 2009 before falling to three yuan per 500 grams in March 2010.
According to data from Xinhua News Agency, the price of garlic in more than 20 provinces and cities at the end of April had increased by between 20 percent to 40 percent from the beginning of April.
An unnamed dealer expects the price of garlic to fall in June as garlic from Jinxiang, Shandong province will be introduced into the market.
