Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) introduced two organic mini watermelon varieties, "Super Sweet Black Angel 168" and "Red Lady" today (July 15). The AFCD held a workshop for local farmers at Tai Lung Experimental Station to introduce and demonstrate the organic cultivation methods of these two premium fruits from March to July this year. The "Super Sweet Black Angel 168" variety is introduced from Australia.
The watermelon has a perfectly spherical shape and weighs 1 to 1.5kg.With a striped skin, its bright crimson-coloured flesh is juicy with seeds. The "Red Lady" watermelon is from Taiwan.Characterised by the absence of seeds, the round-shaped fruit is crispy, tasty and sweet. It can weigh up to 2kg. The AFCD offered technical support and field instruction to ensure good yield. The workshop was well-received.
Forty-two organic farmers completed the workshop and tried growing the watermelons at their own farms. Both varieties adapt well to the local climate and have been available in the market since July. To encourage farmers to expand their customer base and share their good yield, the AFCD will organise a Local Organic Watermelon Festival at Tuen Mun Farmers' Market this Saturday (July 17).Other local premium organic produce such as leaf vegetables and fruits in season will also be available for sale.
Tuen Mun Farmers' Market is located at Crossroads Village, 2 Castle Peak Road, Tuen Mun (opposite Gold Coast Phase I) andopens from 10am to 4pm every Saturday. Admission is free. For details of the Local Organic Watermelon Festival and arrangements under inclement weather conditions, please visit www.afcd.gov.hk .
