No oranges from Shanghai that were believed to be coloured with toxic candle wax by fruit traders in Shanghai had been brought into the country, said a statement from the Health Ministry. It said that this followed an investigation and monitoring carried out at the country's entry points until today. The statement said the ministry had carried out an investigation to ensure that this product was not imported or sold in local markets.
"Meanwhile, monitoring at supermarkets in Johor, Penang and Selangor found that this product was not sold in the local market," the statement said. Local press reports recently stated that the Shanghai authorities had directed fruit traders to stop the sale of oranges believed to have been coloured with toxic candle wax. "Members of the public can also obtain information on activities on safety control and food quality carried out by the ministry at the website http://fsg.moh.gov.my," the statement said.
