Uruguayan fruit producers are getting ready to enter United States market in 2011 with Citrus fruits exports, according to the President of the Uruguayan Fruits Producers and Exporters Union (Upefruy)-Horacio Ozer Ami, after the Southern Hemisphere Conference-Congreso del Hemisferio Sur de Eurofruit-which took place in Punta del Este.
Upefruy gathers 95% of the exporting fruit producers and its President sustained that this process is coming to life with the Livestock, Agriculture and Fishing Ministry, the Uruguay XXI Institute and the State Direction of Development Projects (DIPORODE)-a growth strategy in the fresh fruits business as a form to gain, not only more volumes, but also better access conditions to the markets. "The idea is to compete in the markets where we already are which are adding some barriers that have to be overcome and to show that we have better producing conditions than other countries", he added.
As a first resort, they will measure the emissions of Carbon dioxide in the production of blueberry and citrus fruits. This local business development strategy includes programs that will cover the whole country, for instance, in the control of fruit fly which is an important barrier to access new markets, as Ozer Ami indicated, expressing that, in the last years, Uruguay went from a supplier of citrus fruits to a supplier of blueberries, pears and apples. In the same sense, went from exporter to one market-Europe-to sell, in the case of Blueberry, to the United States and Canada, and citrus fruits to China.
