Trina Solar Ltd. said Monday it plans to invest about $800 million over the next three years in research and development facilities.

The Chinese solar maker said the investment in the Changzhou Trina PV Park will help expand the company's manufacturing capacity. This year, Trina will ship about 1 gigawatt of solar modules, more than double its 2009 output, or a 151 percent increase, the company said.

Trina also said that its subsidiary Changzhou Trina Solar Energy Co. Ltd. surpassed its revenue expectations for 2010.

Company shares fell 27 cents, or 1 percent, at $23.35 in premarket trading.
