South Australia's gross domestic product is set to increase by $30 million with the expansion of a citrus packing shed in the Riverland. AgriExchange is a big player in the citrus market, producing around 40 per cent of South Australia's citrus crop. But it's set to get even bigger with a contribution from the SA Government-funded Riverland Futures Fund of $620,000, which will help the company expand and improve its packing facility.
Minister for Regional Development Gail Gago says the facility shows promise, not just for growth in agriculture, but for sustainable growth of the Riverland area. About 150 casual jobs per year will come with the growth of the packing shed and the increase in citrus production in orchards. Richie Roberts, divisional manager at AgriExchange, says the company had planned the expansion for a couple of years, but the government assistance will allow it to be fast-tracked.
