A FRESHWOMAN from Qinghua University won three awards at the 16th 21st Century National English Speaking Competition yesterday and will attend an international English speaking competition in London later this year.
Xu Jiru, 18, won the champion, jointly organized by China Daily and the Organizing Committee of the Shenzhen Summer Universiade. She also won awards for the most popular and the most potential, according to the organizers of the competition.
I am very proud to win this competition. I think all the contestants were really good and I am just lucky to win so many prizes, said Xu, a first-year law student.
Second prize went to Zhang Xiaojie from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies while Liu Shiqiu from South China University of Technology was third.
A South Korean, Ma Jin-yong, and a Thai student, Jiratha Thiradanon, won special awards for foreign contestants.
Founded in 1996, the competition is the most prestigious English speaking contest in China.
