SHENZHEN has started painting traffic facilities such as road fences and bridges at a cost of 265 million yuan (US$40.75 million).
The work is an attempt to beautify the roads ahead of the Universiade, a news conference at the Shenzhen Municipal Transport Commission said Friday.
The city cleaned and painted 13 million squares and 269 road bridges in 2010, Wen Wenhua, head of law enforcement at the commission said.
Since Feb. 25, the commission started to repair or replace road signs at expressways, trunk roads and roads near Universiade venues, business areas and key public venues.
The commission also organized language experts including foreigners to check wrongly or poorly translated road signs and design new road fences and dividing fences.
By April 7, the commission received 165 suggestions for the translation of road signs. Residents can call 8322-8000 or send e-mails to lym@sztb.gov.cn to share more ideas. The commission will install some newly designed road fences in May.
The new designs will be selected from 11 entries from a two-month design competition which will end on April 26.
To improve the traffic at Shenzhen airport, the commission will renovate roads to the north of the airport and will add 300 waiting bays for taxis.
