SHENZHEN has become one of the major mainland cities where graduates from overseas institutions start business.
The number of overseas students returning here has reached 40,000, according to sources from the Shenzhen Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs.
Among them, 22 experts were selected in the national 1,000 Experts Program. In 2010, the city introduced 1,646 overseas scholars, experts and students, an increase of 23 percent compared with 2009.
The city started the program in 2001 and every year more than 1,000 overseas students return to Shenzhen.
One-third of students returned from the United Kingdom in 2010 followed by 11 percent from the United States and 10 percent from Australia, the administration said.
Among those returning, 9 percent have a doctorate or above and master s degree holders accounted for 72 percent of the total.
In 2010, 343 returning students were from the world s top 100 universities, accounting for 21 percent of the total.
The city has established eight industrial parks for returning students. Some of the enterprises started by these students, such as Netac, BGI Shenzhen and Thunder, have become leaders in their fields.
The city established recruitment offices in North America and Japan to recruit professionals last year. Two offices would be established in Europe and Australia this year.
