THE Shenzhen Science Museum was blacklisted as a fire hazard after an inspection by fire control authorities in the first quarter.

It was the fourth consecutive time the museum had been listed as a fire hazard, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported yesterday.

Located on Shangbu Road, the museum first appeared on the quarterly blacklist in June last year. However, measures to rectify fire hazards had proceeded at snail pace, which was initially attributed to a financial strain, according to the Futian District fire control department.

The museum opened in 1990 and had aged with inadequate fire control equipment, the paper said.

The automatic fire alarm system was not working and a water pump should have been replaced according to fire control regulations.

Although the museum could now afford to rectify fire hazards and had renewed some fire control facilities, exterior decoration, which is part of a citywide facelift for the Universiade, was causing further delay.

Once a popular place for science and technology exhibitions, the museum had lost its appeal with much of its space rented to occupational training schools.

A total of 12 institutions were on the fire hazard blacklist in the first quarter, six of which had been blacklisted in the fourth quarter of last year, the paper said.
