Foxconn donation
FOXCONN, the largest electronics contract manufacturer in the world and manufacturer of popular Apple gadgets, will donate 1 billion yuan (US$152.8 million) to Qinghua University for research over the next 10 years.
Chairman of the Taiwan-based group, Terry Gou, announced the donation on the eve of the centenary of the university to be celebrated April 24. Foxconn has about 700,000 employees on the mainland including 430,000 in Shenzhen.
Independent enrollment
SHENZHEN Institute of Information Technology will enroll 200 high school graduates from Guangdong Province through independent entrance examinations this year.
The institute is one of 200 polytechnic schools in China approved for independent enrollment in October last year. Students can study software engineering, communications technology, computer application technology and electronic commerce at the institute. Students can log on to http://www.sziit.com.cn or http://ddzs.sziit.com.cn to apply. The deadline for application is April 25.
Fair booths
ALL the booths at the main venue of the 7th Shenzhen International Cultural Industries Fair had been booked by 1,826 exhibitors, the fair organizer said.
The fair will be held at Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center on May 13. The fair attracted nearly 10,000 foreign buyers from 85 countries and regions last year.
Travel fraud suspect
A WOMAN has been detained by police for allegedly defrauding 12 elderly tourists of about 36,000 yuan (US$5,507) and leaving them stranded in Zhongying Street in Yantian District on Sunday. According to the market supervision authority, the woman, identified as Xie, was not employed by Shenzhen Comfort Travel Service Co. Ltd., but rather the unlicensed Shenzhen Comfort International Travel Service Co. Ltd. The 12 tourists from Hubei Province believed they had signed for a package tour with the former. An investigation continued.
Metro trials
SHENZHEN Metro Group is inviting 1,000 residents for a test run on three lines in May and June. Application forms can be obtained from Metro stations on Lines 1 and 2. The three lines will open June 30.
Online licenses
POLICE had received 4,258 online applications to renew drivers licenses since the online service was opened March 10. Its Web site also received 321,212 visits in the month, police said.
