A TOTAL of eight workers were taken to hospital with poisoning after eating rice noodles contaminated with a toxic chemical bought at a supermarket in Luohu District on Wednesday.

The eight workers were being treated in Luohu District People s Hospital and were in stable conditions. Authorities were investigating whether the chemical was added intentionally, yesterday s Daily Sunshine reported.

The eight workers bought a bag of Luzhu Longkou brand rice noodles at Jinhaitian Supermarket near Luohu Stadium several days ago and ate them for breakfast Wednesday morning. They felt uncomfortable half an hour later and doctors confirmed they had been poisoned.

The Luohu District center for disease control and prevention (CDC) and the city s quality supervision authority found the rice noodles contained tetramine, a poison used to kill mice.

Authorities are trying to find out how the tetramine got into the rice noodles.
