A PAIR of giant pandas was expected to call Shenzhen home in June in time for the Summer Universiade, said Su Qixiao, vice general manager of Shenzhen Safari Park.
The pandas, a male and a female from Wolong Panda Research Center in Sichuan Province, will be Universiade pandas, just like Asian Games Pandas and Olympic Pandas, Su told the Daily Sunshine on Tuesday.
Shenzhen Safari Park will rebuild its panda house to accommodate the pandas.
The panda house had been vacant since another panda, Yongba, 25, was returned to Sichuan in 2009 due to old age.
Yongba had lived in Shenzhen for five years and was a star of the park. Her return to her native place followed a claim by a netizen that she had been mistreated, an accusation denied by the park management.
