SHENZHEN reported 10,291 new cases of cancer patients last year, increasing by 4.77 percent compared with 2009, the city s Chronic Disease Control and Prevention Center said.
The growth rate is down from 13.3 percent in 2009.
Of the total, 163 died from the disease, yesterday s Daily Sunshine reported.
Lung cancer was the biggest killer, followed by cancers of the rectum, breast, liver, stomach, leukemia and thyroid cancer. Lung cancer was the top killer of men while breast cancer was more fatal for women.
The large number of patients with cancers of the lung, liver and stomach were mainly due to smoking and drinking, the center said.
The number of thyroid center patients has increased sharply over past few years, particularly for women. This could be due to the high pressure of life and work for the modern woman, an expert from the hospital told the newspaper.
The incidence of lymph cancer had risen among men, mainly due to pollutants from interior decoration, environmental and workplace pollution. <2001>(Wang Yuanyuan)
