Fake iPhone makers sentenced

THE CEO and shareholder of Tianshida Co. in Shenzhen identified as Cai was convicted of producing counterfeit iPhones and other mobile phones.

Cai was sentenced to three years in jail, suspended for four years, and fined 110,000 yuan (US$17,000) by the Bao an District People s Court, the Daily Sunshine reported Saturday.

The Tianshida Co. was also fined 110,000 yuan. Another three were sentenced to one year in jail, suspended for two years, and fined 10,000 yuan each.

The city s quality supervision authority raided the company s offices and found 45 counterfeit iPhones worth about 28,000 yuan on June 22, 2009. Police arrested three suspects Nov. 16, 2009 at Tianshida Co. and found 30,000 counterfeit OPPO mobile network access marks, 430 counterfeit OPPO mobile phones and 480 counterfeit Gionnee mobile phones.

The counterfeit goods were worth about 240,000 yuan.

The Tianshida prosecution was among top 10 intellectual property rights infringement cases in the past five years in Shenzhen, the city procuratorate revealed at a seminar Friday.

Victims in the top 10 cases included companies like Tencent, Huawei, Skyworth, Cisco and Hewlett-Packard.
