TIGHTER traffic control could be implemented in Shenzhen and Dongguan during the Universiade to ensure better air quality, the Guangdong Province Environmental Protection Bureau said Sunday.
Traffic control could be tightened in extremely adverse weather to decrease exhaust emissions, said Zhang Zhentian, vice director of the bureau.
Other measures to protect air quality included restricting or suspending production at some factories discharging large volumes of pollutants, yesterday s Southern Metropolis Daily reported.
The Guangdong Provincial Government would ask neighboring cities to work with Shenzhen to create a better environment for the Universiade, Zhang said.
Shenzhen was asked to speed up pollution control at power plants, reduce car exhaust and industrial emissions to reduce pollution.
Plans for controlling water pollution would also be drawn up soon, Zhang said.
Shenzhen had to prepare a list of pollution sources and send special teams to monitor them, Zhang said.
Shenzhen and neighboring cities should take this chance to improve the environment in the whole of the Pearl River Delta, he said.
