SHENZHEN has seen a decline in the sales of sea food due to a public concern over food safety in the wake of Japan s nuclear radiation leakages.
There had been a 30-percent decrease in the sales volume of iced fish at the biggest farm produce market in the city, Buji farm produce market, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.
The wholesale price of iced fish had dropped by 10 percent.
Fears of radiation also had an impact on restaurants, which also saw a drop in demand for sea food with many restaurants recommending consumers order freshwater fish.
Shenzhen s sea food is safe and there is no need to worry, said Gan Weiming, head of the fishery department of the city s agriculture and fishery bureau.
Gan said sea food sold in Shenzhen was mainly from Nan ao, Yantian and Shekou and very little was from outside Shenzhen. <2001> (Li Hao)
