MENG WANZHOU, daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, has become an executive director and chief financial officer (CFO) of the Shenzhen-based telecom equipment giant.

Meng was among 18 members of Huawei s new board of directors and board of supervisors elected in January by more than 60,000 employees who hold shares in the company. The names of the 18 members were publicly disclosed for the first time in Huawei s annual report Sunday.

Ren Ping, son of the founder and reportedly also a Huawei employee, does not appear on the list. Media reports last year said Sun Yafang, Huawei s chairwoman, was being forced to step down to pave the way for a succession by Ren Ping. Huawei denied the reports saying they were rumors.

Sun remains chairwoman and Ren Zhengfei vice chairman in the new board of directors.

Meng, a graduate of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, joined Huawei in 1993. The new lineup of the board of directors indicates Huawei has become a modern enterprise, rather than a family-run business, Shenzhen Economic Daily said yesterday.

Seven of the 13 directors were new faces, according to the Daily.

Western suspicions that Huawei is controlled by the Chinese military have led to setbacks in its overseas expansion, especially in the United States. Huawei says on its Web site that it was owned by 65,179 employees as of Dec. 31, 2010. Ren Zhengfei held 1.4 percent of the shares.
