EFFECTIVE management was needed to protect coastal green tracks for families and hikers, yesterday s Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.
Several coastal green tracks were now eyesores with piles of garbage and damaged facilities.
As there is no designated government department to manage the tracks, it is difficult to maintain the environment, said a security guard at the Mangrove Reserve park in Nanshan District.
Many drain covers had been stolen and the track had become dangerous to visitors, a nearby resident told of the dangers of the park.
I fell into a drain the other night when taking a walk after dinner. It is very dangerous, particularly because children come to play here and I think special care should be taken to ensure safety, Lu Zhiwei told the newspaper.
Many residents also fished and caught crabs on the beach. It is very dangerous and not good for the environment. [People] throw garbage on the beach and tracks. We try to stop them, but they don t seem to care, the security guard said.
Another coastal green track in Shatoujiao in Yantian District had similar problems. Compared with garbage and [missing] drain covers, the boards on the boardwalk are more dangerous, a resident surnamed Hong said.
Due to lack of maintenance, many boards were broken and people could fall. I was almost hurt twice when walking along the track. It is very dangerous because many elderly people and children come here all the time. The tracks need to be repaired as soon as possible, Hong said.
The situation was similar along Dameisha beach in Yantian District as a visitor described.
I could not believe what I saw when I arrived here. It was like a refuse dump and nearly all the public facilities were in need of repair, the unidentified visitor said.
If nothing is done to maintain the tracks, Hong concluded, there will be a serious accident sooner or later. (Wang Yuanyuan)
