THE flood control department is working on detailed plans to ensure effective drainage systems at Universiade sports venues with two tropical storms expected in July and August.

Drains at Shenzhen University Town Sports Center and Shenzhen Bay Sports Center were found to have been blocked with mud. The same problems were found in drains around Shenzhen University, Zhang Qiwen, director of Shenzhen Municipal Water Resources Bureau, said yesterday.

There will be four to five tropical storms this year. Two in July and August will seriously affect the city, said Wang Yanqing, director of Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory.

The observatory expects 1,550 to 1,700 mm of rainfall this year, 20 percent less than average, and there would be eight or nine storm days, Wang said.

To improve flood control, the flood control office would strengthen banks at reservoirs and rivers, and improve the drainage systems.
