Food safety

FOOD safety and traffic control have been listed as key issues for proposals by the municipal people s congress (MPC) for government agencies to resolve this year.

The standing committee of the MPC required the government to submit implementation plans relating to traffic control and food safety by May 31 and report the results by Nov. 30. The standing committee commissioned a total of 694 proposals collected at the annual session in January for government agencies.

Govt. reshuffle

THE Longgang District Government cut five departments from the original 30 in a recent reshuffle, according to a ceremony Tuesday.

The district dropped the agriculture, fishery and oceanic bureau and reformed trade promotion, human resources, culture and sports, and environmental protection bureaus.

Syndicate on trial

NINETEEN suspects who allegedly organized online gambling involving 10 billion yuan (US$1.52 billion) went on trial in a Yantian court Tuesday.

The criminal syndicate, headed by three Hong Kong people, developed computer software and had organized gambling on soccer, tennis and basketball since 2007.

The syndicate network had expanded to cover Pearl River Delta cities in Guangdong in two years. Guangdong police seized 278 suspects in June last year.

The hearing is continuing.

Donation for orphans

THE city s Youth Development Fund has received more than 320,000 yuan in donations for the orphans of philanthropist Cong Wei after his widow Xing Dan was killed when her car was hit by a stone on an expressway April 13. Cong died of cancer five years ago.

Donations can be sent to the Cong Fei Charity Special Fund by calling 8210-4445 and 8210-4644, the city s volunteer association said.
