LUOHU police arrested an ex-convict who posed as a policeman to bilk tens of thousands of yuan out of four women.
Liu Jianzhong, 34, a Jiangxi native, was arrested in an apartment in Luohu on April 11 when he was using a forged police card, Shenzhen Evening News reported yesterday. Police also seized two forged identity cards in his name.
Liu admitted that a friend of his in Gangxia in Futian District had made the cards for him.
Police investigators found Liu had served three jail sentences totaling nine years for fraud posing as a policeman since 1998.
His most recent sentence was 18 months in April 2009 for illegally possessing police uniforms and handcuffs.
In recent months, Liu gained the trust of four women, all in their 30s, by posing as a policeman, and had romantic relationships with them, the paper said. He borrowed 7,500 yuan (US$1,153) from a Ms. Xiao in Luohu earlier this month. He also borrowed more than 10,000 yuan from a Ms. Xiang, a Hong Kong resident, and 4,400 yuan from a Ms. Cheng in Luohu. The money was never returned.
Xiao said she met Liu through QQ, a popular instant messaging service. Liu showed his police card when they met and won her trust.
Police were considered trustworthy, which explained why Liu targeted single women in their 30s, police said. (Martin Li)
