IT was like a dream to play a leading role in lighting the Universiade flame, said Li Luya, 20, a student from Shenzhen University (SZU), who led four young foreign students to light the Universiade flame at Qinghua University yesterday.

Studying in the English Department at SZU, Li was first in a national selection of ceremony volunteers for the Universiade, which attracted more than 120,000 college women.

Li was later selected a torchbearer.

I did not expect to be part of the flame lighting ceremony until I was informed April 20, she said.

Only by repeated practice could we be sure there would be no mistakes at the official ceremony, said Li.

It was a big honor for me to represent Asian students at the ceremony, she said.

Born in Jilin Province, Li moved to Shenzhen with her parents at the age of 3 and was enrolled in SZU in 2008.
