SHENZHEN is taking stricter measures to control vehicle emissions, reduce power plant discharge to ensure a cleaner Universiade.
From May, yellow-labeled vehicles that fail emission standards will be banned from the CBD and roads around Universiade venues from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. In July, such vehicles will be banned between 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and all day citywide and on the opening and closing days of the Games.
At a news conference yesterday, Lin Hanzhang, deputy chief of the environmental protection commission, said more than 310,000 vehicles would be affected by the rule, accounting for 17.2 percent of the total. Emissions from yellow-labeled vehicles accounted for 60 percent of vehicle emissions, Lin said.
Vehicle emissions were the major source of air pollution, accounting for 70 percent of total pollution. The city government will spend 440 million yuan (US$68 million) on the renovation of industrial boilers and power plants.
Five power companies will have a low-carbon fueling device installed to reduce carbon emissions.
