On the 14th day of the implementation of Yellow River sediment-water regulation, artificial density current, as a key link of the regulation had appeared successfully and began to discharge out of Xiaolangdi reservoir at 16:00,on June 29. Reservoir density current is the peculiar flow form of the rivers with high concentration of suspended load such as the Yellow River. When the flow with high concentration of suspended load enters the reservoir and encounters clear water, due to the density difference, it goes under the clear water and becomes a stream of turbid flow. The density current of the Yellow River appeared in Sanmenxia reservoir in 1960s for the first time, as well in August 2001,it began to appear in Xiaolangdi reservoir, and in August 2 to 7 2003 again. In 2004, during the third sediment-water regulation experiment, density current was made artificially for the first time through the scientific regulation of Wanjiazhai, Sanmenxia and Xiaolangdi reservoirs. The artificial density current of this year was still made through the regulation of Wanjiazhai, Sanmenxia and Xiaolangdi reservoirs. The water discharged out of the Xiaolangdi before the appearance of density current. The sediment discharged out of Xiaolangdi after the appearance of density current. |
