Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi denied Germany their first victory against the Azzurri in 16 years with a late equalizer at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday.
Germany had a good opportunity against the new-look Italy to wrap up a first win since 1995.
Italy made a nervy start, while Germany displayed some good passing on a poor pitch.
With 16 minutes gone in the match Germany opened the scoring in front of the home crowd. After a terrific one-two combination, Thomas Mueller set up for Mirsolav Klose, who had no problems driving the ball to net his 59th international goal.
As the match progressed, Italy recovered their composure and German defender Per Mertesacker was lucky when he fouled striker Antonio Cassano inside penalty during a period of sustained Italy pressure, but referee Eric Braamhaar denied Italy the penalty.
After the break, Germany eased off and tried to kill the game. But it proved to be to their detriment when Italy striker Guiseppe Rossi utilized a pass into his path by defender Domenico Criscito to slot home with a follow-up shot from close distance.
The draw revived the match as both sides exchanged attacks in an effort to secure the win befoer the game ended in stalemate.
