On 15 December 2008 at 10:30 AM, a cargo ship named Jin Hai Yuan departed from Mawei Qingzhou wharf and directly sailed to the port of Taipei. This is the first freighter that has sailed from Fuzhou to the Island of Taiwan at the first day of direct links.
Mawei Customs House(affiliated to Fuzhou Customs District) adopted several measures to make this sail a successful one. Dedicated counters were set up to make services more accessible; a group of experienced Customs officers were picked up to provide efficient and convenient clearance services; the clearance patterns of declaration ahead of time and release at the time the goods arrived were employed to ensure a speedy clearance for all the imports and exports; green channel and information desks were opened to give guidance to the enterprises and customs brokers; communication with other port authorities and the Taiwan Affairs Office has been enhanced to perfect the clearance work.
With the new shipping routes, it now takes only a dozen hours, compared with more than 30 hours previously, to sail from Fuzhou to Taipei as the distance has been shortened to 100 sea miles from 400 sea miles. On the same day, there were three other ships which sailed from Fuzhou to the ports of Gaoxiong, Keelung and Taipei of Taiwan Island. A new dawn has descended over the Straits.
