BEIJING, March 29 (Xinhua) -- China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) "exchanged views" on restarting six-party talks regarding the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and head of the Communist Party of China Central Committee's International Department Wang Jiarui held talks with visiting ROK Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan, who is on a three-day visit to China from Monday to Wednesday.

This is Kim's first trip to China since he took office last fall. ROK and China agreed last year to regularly hold meetings between top diplomats of the two countries.

During their talks, Yang and Kim "exchanged views on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula, resuming the six-party talks as soon as possible and other issues that both are concerned with," the foreign ministry said in a press release.

The six-party talks began in 2003, involving China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the United States, ROK, Russia and Japan. Six rounds of talks had been held before December 2008, when the talks were stalled.

Hailing China and ROK's bilateral ties, Yang and Kim agreed to continue exchanges and cooperation and pledged to advance the strategic cooperative partnership between China and ROK.
