Li Peigen Received the Plaque of US-China CERC in US

The plaque ceremony of the U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center CERC was unveiled in Washington on American Time Jan 18 during President Hu Jintao's state visit to the U.S. China's Minister for Science and Technology Wan Gang, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and Zhang Guobao of China's National Energy Administration jointly unveiled the plaque. The ceremony was one of the important steps in the U.S.-China Clean Energy Cooperation.


As one of the Chinese representative, HUST President Li Peigen received the plaque and signed the joint work plan for research on clean coal technology together with the U.S. director Dr. Jerald Fletcher from West Virginia University. Huazhong University of Science and Technology will lead the Chinese consortium of advanced coal technology. Deputy director Liu Chaohui of the State Key Laboratory for Coal Combustion attended the bilateral workshop on clean coal technology as a HUST representative.

The establishment of U.S.-China CERC was announced by President Barack Obama and President Hu Jintao during President Obama's visit to China in 2009. The purpose of the CERC is to facilitate joint research, development and commercialization of clean energy technologies in priority areas of clean coal, clean vehicle and building high efficiency technology. A total of $150 million will be contributed by both countries in the next five years.

Within the three current CERC programs, the Clean Coal, including Carbon Capture and Storage, program addresses technology and practices for clean coal utilization and carbon capture, utilization and storage. The research tasks include clean coal power generation and transformation, the development of new, low-cost capture technologies and the development of geological sequestration practices.

HUST will lead the teams of experts of China advanced coal technology consortium and will develop and test new technologies through cooperation with the U.S. consortium. Prof Zheng Chuguang, State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion, is the director of the advanced coal technology consortium of China side.
