Tianjin University Peiyang Chorus Won Prizes in 2006 Busan Choral Festival & Competition

In the 2006 Busan Choral Festival & Competition held from Nov. 15 to 19 in Busan, Korea, the Peiyang Chorus of Tianjin University won a silver prize in the Ethnic category and a bronze prize in the Classical category in the competition. During the 5 days events, 41 professional and non-professional choirs from 12 countries and regions participated in the competition for the categories of classical, ethnic and popular.

As the only non-professional choir consisting of university undergraduate and postgraduate students, Tianjin University Peiyang Chorus attracted the audience and jury from the very beginning of the competition for their unique and harmonious choral music. The 2006 Busan Choral Festival & Competition was hosted by Korean Choral Institute (KCI) and supported by Korean Ministry of Culture & Tourism and Busan Metropolitan City.

Seventeen ambassadors from different countries in Korea, Mayor of Busan City and President of KCI were presented at the awarding ceremony of the Festival. Tianjin University Peiyang Chorus was founded in 1985, consisting of undergraduate and postgraduate students on campus, most of whom are engineering majors.

The Chorus has been awarded many national and international prizes in the past two decades. In 2005, they won the First Prize in the 1st National College Artistic Contest and medals in the 21st Century International Choral Competition in 2003 in Malaysia. After the competition, the Choral Group also visited Ewha Womans University and Kyung Hee University in Seoul to have exchange and choral performance with Korean students and visiting Japanese students.
