Nov. 1, 2010 - Elkem had silicon-related operating revenues of NOK2,211-million in the third quarter of 2010 vs. NOK1,441 million in the same 2009 period. The EBITDA was NOK131-million in the in the third quarter, compared with NOK-162 million in the same period of 2009. The quarterly EBITDA for the third quarter of 2010 was NOK275-million, excluding Elkem Solar, vs. NOK207-million in the second quarter.
Orkla said market conditions for the silicon-related businesses were good in the third quarter with good demand and high prices for silicon and ferrosilicon for the steel and aluminum industries and the chemicals market. At the end of September, the silicon-related businesses were operating at virtually full capacity. In the third quarter, average utilization of capacity was 91%, compared to 57% in the third quarter last year.
Elkem Solar had EBITDA of NOK-144 million in the third quarter vs. NOK-191-million in the third quarter of 2009. The process of ramping up the factory continued and production increased gradually throughout the quarter. Volume produced in the third quarter totaled 598 mt and Elkem Solar anticipates increased production in the fourth quarter. The market has developed positively for solar-grade silicon throughout the third quarter.
