Dredging work of Anhui's Xuancheng section of the Wushen (Wuhu-Shanghai) Canal kicked off, marking the beginning of an overall renovation of the canal.
The canal in Anhui section will be invested 4.4 billion yuan($647 million) for repair. It will open to ships of 1,000 tons and make the distance between Wuhu city of Anhui province and Shanghai 100 kilometers shorter than the Yangtse River after completion.
The canal, known as the second channel of East China's water transportation, is one of the oldest in China, dating back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC - 476 BC).
