In Chinese tradition, February 17th this year is the Lantern Festival which features family reunion as well as grand and joyful celebration. According to Cao Baoming, Vice Chairman of Chinese Folk Literature and Art Society, the origin of the Lantern Festival, also known by different names in Chinese, could date back to the West Han Dynasty, which was as early as 2,000 years ago. The festival is always meant to be full of joy and celebration, including various entertainments like lantern shows, lantern riddles, dragon dance and lion dance, the Yangko dance, and many more. Celebration in the ancient times was even greater. People in the Tang Dynasty could enjoy a 3-day holiday, and it once was a 5-day or even 10-day holiday in Song and Min Dynasty, respectively. During the daytime, people could participate in many entertainment activities at the local market, and at night every household would enjoy the glittering lights of lanterns and warm blessings all together, bringing the joyful festivity of the Spring Festival to its climax.
