The Chinese government launched a three-year reconstruction campaign for the quake affected areas of Sichuan province following its massive earthquake nearly two and a half years ago. Since then, provinces and regions around the country have provided a helping hand. Guangdong province has now completed more than 700 projects, a year ahead of schedule.

China's southern province of Guangdong has been one of the major contributors to the reconstruction of Wenchuan county, the epicenter of the Sichuan earthquake on May 12, 2008.

New towns and villages have been built over the remains of the massive tremor, giving hope to local residents.

After the quake, Guangdong province became the aid partner for Wenchuan county with an investment of 82 billion yuan, or 12 billion US dollars. Now, all 16 new schools are in use, and other programs such as new homes, hospitals, roads, drainage systems, gyms and culture centers have been completed.

Chen Maohui, Chief of Guangdong Reconstruction Team said "With the reconstruction efforts over the past two years, we've provided housing, water facilities, built schools and roads, created jobs and offered welfare programs for senior residents. This should help the county take a big leap forward. "

Locals have spoken highly of the infrastructure projects, especially schools, hospitals and plazas. And they can't hide their gratitude.

One Wenchuan resident said "We want to thank the helpers, thank the Party, we'll never forget."

While the reconstruction projects may have been completed, it does not mean the end of help from the province. Guangdong has signed a number of long term agreements with Wenchuan, including cooperation in job and tourism services.
